SOB Info Notes August 8th
SOBs Info Notes August 8th.
There is a lot going on right now.
Herb Schon, 79, of Santa Fe, suffered serious injuries when he crashed his bike on West Jemez Road near the bottom of Pajarito Ski Hill. Schon is well known for logging thousands of miles, including a ride from San Francisco to New Hampshire in 2007, showing that age is not a deterrent to physical activity.
The famous SOB cyclist and past President crashed into a guard gate at Los Alamos National Laboratory and is reported in satisfactory condition, hospital officials said. He is in rehab for occupational, physical and cognitive therapy, said his wife, Reenie Jackson-Schon, who visits him every day.
He is a member of the Santa Fe Seniors on Bikes cycling club, serving as it’s President from 1999 till 2007. The group of bicycling enthusiasts meets on Thursdays for rides around the Santa Fe area. The club has over 70 members.
“I guess he is doing as well as could be expected, considering the magnitude of his injuries,” Jackson-Schon said. His injuries include a fractured skull, subdural hematoma, broken vertebrae, broken clavicle, three fractures of his pelvis and a major laceration on his shoulder. Despite his injuries, Jackson-Schon said he is already talking about riding again. “He’s talking about the ski season, and he’s worried that his bike might not be in good shape,” she said.
A year ago, Schon suffered a broken femur in Albuquerque when he was hit by a car. Jackson-Schon said she is a bicycle rider herself, but she described herself as a “chicken. I don’t have the same enthusiasm that he has,” she said. “I tend to brake on hills. There’s no way I would ride down Pajarito. I ride up it. I don’t ride down it.”
