So who are these SOBs!       - a brief history..

“You’re only young once but you can be
immature forever.” –Germaine Greer

And just because you’re pushing 50—or 65 or 80—doesn’t mean you can’t wear spandex shorts and form-fitting shirts and ride around on a bicycle. Just ask any of the several dozen members of the whimsically named SOB bike club of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The concept for the SOBs, Seniors on Bikes, was imported by cyclist Joel Stein when he and his wife, Mary, moved to Santa Fe from Boulder in 1997. Through a newspaper ad, he put the word out that he was seeking riders-of-a-certain-age for regular Thursday-morning jaunts. Among the charter members were Rennie Finlay, Jim Hallquist and Bob Hilley—all still active members…except when joints or other body parts need replacing.

Joel established regular routes and snail-mailed out the season’s plan to members. Word of mouth attracted Herb Schon, newly arrived from New York City and eager to have people to ride with. He brought in some of his Eldorado neighbors, and with the help of a computer—and his wife--took over the maintenance and dissemination of the membership roster and the annual ride plan.  He instituted a Tuesday ski-hill ride and also injected a social aspect to the club by hosting a summer cook-out. In 2008, he designed and had manufactured a club uniform, nagging members unmercifully until they agreed to order enough to make the price break. Those bright red and yellow shirts are now collectors’ items!

Other innovations introduced since Joel came south include the formation of a board of directors, heading by the unflaggingly enthusiastic Edwin Crosswhite, who established the club’s affiliation with the League of American Cyclists (and its liability insurance coverage) and instituted modest dues to help defray the costs of his colorful weekly newsletter. He also rounded up sponsors to provide discounts to card-carrying SOBs, and with his ubiquitous camera he supplies much material for the club web site,  www.santafesobs.com, which was created and is maintained by the brilliant ex-Kiwi Ian Norrish.

The SOBs’ social side has grown too, and overnight rides introduced, most recently a three-day Enchanted Circle trip, but the biggest change perhaps is the structure of the Thursday rides: once a casual collection of riders of differing skills who did what they felt like, Thursdays now offer a choice of longer, faster rides (40-60 miles) or rides that average 30 miles at a gentler pace. Each is overseen by a leader, and a sweeper (or HERO—High Energy Rear Observer) is always designated to make sure stragglers aren’t eaten by coyotes. Route sheets are provided at each ride’s sign-in so getting lost isn’t as easy as it used to be. Most rides conclude with a coffee or snack before the members separate.

Though the name Seniors on Bikes implies geezerhood, in fact most members are in their 60’s and a number are a decade younger. And a few pushing 80, God bless ‘em. Some are retirees, some, alas, still work. There are currently about 50 members, a mix of men and women, and an average ride generally attracts half of them. Several rides offer an option for mountain bikes, but most are designed for road bikes. Members are required to wear helmets and obey all traffic laws. Those who flout the rules of the road risk the wrath of Judy Costlow and Devon Dalzell, both frequent ride leaders and sticklers for cycling etiquette. Members are encouraged to know how to fix flats and to carry the appropriate tools and equipment, although no one will be abandoned (unless Judy is late for her next caffeine fix).

The SOBs welcomes all: some of our members are really good, really fast riders, some are, um, less so. We do look for a sense of humor and a willingness to help out when needed (but we also have a number of cranky, dour characters we keep for old times’ sake, so don’t let that deter you). Check out the web site; if you like what you see, and you think you’ll look good in red-and-yellow Lycra, come join us.

Enchanted Circle SOB Ride September 2009

Supported by two SAG wagons, a group of 10 SOB riders conquered the Enchanted Circle hills and weather in a three day tour this past week. A fun tour, covering 150 miles from Penasco, through Angelfire, Red River, Questa and Taos, including the legendary Bobcat Pass, Holman Hill and U.S Hill. Check out the photos here

For these SOBs, it's all about the ride

Club members with Seniors on Bikes enjoy exercise, companionship

The SOBs is an eclectic bike club with only one requirement: You must be older than 50.

In the past year and a half, the club, which stands for Seniors on Bikes, has seen its membership double to 51 riders between the ages of 50 and 83, said member Bill Pollock.

Wearing their bright red and yellow biking outfits with SOBs stenciled on the back of their jerseys, the seniors are not hard to spot as they ride single file on the highways or fill a nearby coffee shop.

As might be imagined, there are multiple interpretations of the SOBs acronym.

"I had a guy come up to me in a cafe recently who said, 'I wish I had the nerve to wear a jersey with SOB on it,' " Pollock said. "We've heard many, some unmentionable, translations of SOB since we started wearing our colors."

Every Thursday, the SOBs meet at a local cafe before embarking on planned rides that average around 40 to 50 miles.

Last week, they biked to Madrid, stopping at Java Junction Cafe for coffee before they cycled back to Santa Fe.

"All of our rides are on highways" said club president Ed Crosswhite. "We are not like a lot of young bikers who ride to see how fast than can go. We average between 13-15 mph. We wear helmets and look out for one another."

Crosswhite, 66, said every ride has a "high energy rear observer" who backs up the pack to help a rider who might happen to break down. The group also stops every 10 miles to pick up stragglers.

Many of the club members are former runners who have turned to cycling because it's easier on the knees, said Judy Costlow, the club's ride director.

And many have elevated their cycling game to compete in the Senior Olympics. Club members Dale Goering, 70, and Ramon Montoya, 75, are both former Senior Olympic champions.

Members also participate in the Santa Fe Century Ride. This March, the 100-mile ride attracted more than 3,000 bicyclists from around the nation, Crosswhite said.

The SOBs exude high energy as illustrated by their planned three-day September ride into the Sangre de Cristos.

"We call it the Enchanted Circle Ride," Pollock said. "We begin in Peñasco, ride 67 miles to Angel Fire and spend the night. On the second day, it's a 64-mile ride to Questa, and on the third day we bike 25 miles back to Peñasco."

All of the hard work the bikers put in during the summer comes to fruition for the Enchanted Circle Ride, Crosswhite said.

Crosswhite, Pollock and Costlow all agreed they ride with the SOBs for two reasons: It's an opportunity to stay healthy and to meet interesting people.

But it was Costlow who put the biking experience in poetic terms: "I ride because the bike is my convertible. The other day, I biked to Hyde Park and roses lined the road for miles. The smell of the roses and being in the open air made me feel empowered. It was wonderful."

Kits arrived yesterday. We're sorting stuff and if you ordered you can stop by to pick up. Unfortunately, we won't be here for the Feb 6 meeting. We'll be in NY celebrating birth of grandchild. I had asked those who were attending that meeting to let me know so we could bring orders to the Cafe. But no one responded so you'll have to arrange to pick up here. If we hear from anyone, maybe there's a volunteer who will pick them up and bring them. The deadline for response from those who attend meeting and a volunteer is Tuesday.

No Country for Old Men (and Women)?

    (A heads-up for September)

The historic Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, NM, one of the venues for the film “No Country…,” will be the destination of a new SOB ride, our first overnighter. The plan is to leave Eldorado at 9 AM on Thursday, September 11, ride to Las Vegas, spend the night at the Plaza, and return the following day. Rain or shine.

The route is almost exactly 60 miles each way, and you have the choice of I-25 all the way or the frontage road from Rowe to Las Vegas. At about half way northbound on the frontage road, Ilfelds Gas-N-Grocery makes a good pit stop; there’s another good stopping point on the return, too. Full route details, including exact mileages and directions, will be supplied prior to the trip.

The Plaza has blocked 10 rooms under “Seniors on Bikes,” and they are giving us a significant volume discount. Rooms range from $81 to $116, with a full breakfast included. Check out their web site at www.plazahotel-nm.com. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel itself has a saloon as well as the well known Landmark Grill. We also plan to have a hospitality suite for post-ride drinks. Of course, there are numerous other motels nearby.

We are asking that participants make their own reservations with the hotel directly at 800-328-1882 or 505-425-3591. Be sure to mention you are with the Seniors on Bikes group. The booking deadline for the discount is July 31. When you make your reservation, however, please let Devon Dalzell know so we can keep track of numbers. She is at 466-1854 or dalzelld@webtv.net.

We also encourage members to invite their non-riding spouses/partners—the more the merrier. Also, this way we can ask them to carry our PJs and teddy bears. And willing partners with large enough cars can perhaps act as sags for those who don’t feel prepared to ride two 60-mile back-to-back days. Again, please let Devon know who’ll be driving so she can coordinate bag pick-ups.

Note that Devon, in Eldorado, has volunteered her driveway for those who prefer not to leave their cars in the Agora parking lot over night.

We hope you’ll join us for this adventure. And remember: what happens in Las Vegas….

Just a heads up about the ride on this Thursday. The ride schedule says we meet at Fort Marcy for the ride to Pojoaque. The parking at Fort Marcy is limited to three hours, so here is what we will do instead. When you drive or ride to Fort Marcy, continue north on Washington Ave/Bishops Lodge Rd to the next left turn - Murales. Turn left here and go to the parking lot behind the tennis courts (it's over the little hill). Turn left and go all the way to the end where there are always parking places. The City is using this parking lot for City employees, but there are places in the back. If you know someone not on the email list, please let them know. Ian, could you put this on the website? Thanks, See you on Thursday! Judy

    Hi All you SOB's,
There will be two rides this Thursday, both leaving from the Santa Fe Community College at 8:00! Meet in the main parking lot - look for cars. The skinny tire ride will be out Rancho Viejo road to Highway 14, then we head south to the Lone Butte Road (just past the San Marcos Cafe). We turn west on the Lone Butte Road and take it to the East frontage road back to 599 and Highway 14 to Rancho Viejo Road. We will have coffee at one of two places to be decided by the group. Dave will lead the mountain bike ride. See you on Thursday!

This is Bike To Work Week, and many Santa Fe coffee shops are giving free coffee to bikers who stop by. I know that the Travel Bug will give you a coffee if you ride there. And probably many others will too! Try it

Hi all you SOB's, Just a note about this Thursday. I think it will be a nice day and this ride is one of the SOB's favorites. It is always a joy to ride along the Pecos River. I ( the ride leader) have to be back in Santa Fe around noon, so I am going to park at the Ranger Station in Pecos and only ride to Terrero and back (about 28 miles). Anyone else who wants to start at the Ranger Station should be there about 8:20. We will meet those of you who will start riding at 8:00 from the Glorieta Turnoff at the stop sign in Pecos about 8:30. We can all ride from there to Terrero. Those who want to continue to Jack's Creek will have a great time. It is a challenging and absolutely gorgeous ride.

For those who park at the Ranger Station, turn right at the stop sign. It is about a block. Park on the far ends of the parking area. They like to leave room for visitors.

    See you on Thursday. Judy

Hi All you SOB's Just a reminder that we meet at the parking lot off Murales road (behind the tennis courts) for this Thursday's ride. We are going to the Ranger Station in Hyde Park and then, back through Tesuque, with a suggested stop at Tesuque Market for coffee. I think traffic is pretty heavy on Hyde Park Road at 8 am, so I will be leading the ride up through Sierra del Norte from Murales rd. We will climb a little more than if we go straight up Hyde Park, but there is almost no traffic. When we hit Hyde Park Road, we will only have a mile or so of heavier traffic. The traffic slows down after Nun's Hill. We will come back through Sierra del Norte to Bishop's Lodge and to Tesuque.

For those who don't want to go to Hyde Park Ranger Station, I suggest you start from Murales at 9 and head up Old Taos Highway to Encantado where you cross to Bishop's Lodge and down to Tesuque. We will meet up at the Market there sometime between 9:30 and 10

    See you tomorrow! Judy

Today's (6/12) new version of the Cochiti Dam ride went through a scenic road to include the two local Pueblos. A near-record turnout of 22 riders (including Dick and Karen Roth) found a very likable flat ride (although some might have called the rollers hills) with enough stops for the paparazzi to record the group for posterity. This must have been the calm before next week's storm to Truchas. Personally, I found an added La Bajada hill climb the perfect finish to today's 38 miles. The course was truly a blaze of color created by the nearly 100 percent wearing of the group's kits.

June 12 was a beautiful day for the SOBs ride, the sun was out but the temperatures were in the 70’s. This was the largest turn out of the season with 22 riders counting Karen and Richard Roth that didn’t get the e-mail about changing the published starting points.
The wind was not a factor as we rode out hwy 16 towards the Cochiti dam. The ride meandered through the farm lands of the Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos along the Rio Grande River. Several times we encountered horses and cattle grazing and at one point crossing the water swollen river. Several cyclists commented on what a great ride this was.

The ride is scheduled to go to Galisto and beyond (towards Stanley). The idea is to make the ride time be in the 3 hour range. So if a 1 1/2 hour ride takes you to Stanley then that would be a good turn around point. How far you ride is the kind of decision you can make at the starting point in Lamy with the ride leaders and other riders.

Please note the web site ride schedule is an 8:30 am start time from the Lamy Amtrak Station with the ride going towards Stanley.

The SOB's ride on Thursday, Sept. 18 starts at the Industrial complex parking lot at the corner of Cerrillos Road (Hwy 14) and Rancho Viejo Road. The best way to get there is proceed south on Cerrillos Road to about 1 mile south of I-25. Make a LEFT turn at the stop light on the corner of Rancho Viejo Rd and Cerrillos (it is a T intersection, only one way to turn). Turn right at the very next street and the parking lot is right there on the right (note the coffee shop).

Remember, 9:00 am start time, Dave plans to get there early so look for him. Also Judy and I will make an effort to get there by 8:30 to help Dave out.

It is reported the road through La Cienega is paved so this should be a nice ride in the 30 mile range (possible to shorten the distance). See you on Thursday!

Thursday's ride (Sept 25) starts in the back parking lot of the Fort Marcy complex. To get to the parking lot from Bishops Lodge Road go one block past the Fort Marcy entrance to Murales Road. Stay on Murales Road to the parking lot (about 3/4 mile). From Old Taos Hwy go one block from the intersection with Paseo de Peralta (about 1/2 mile) to Murales Road. The parking lot is within view of Old Taos Hwy.

The ride is mainly in the Las Campanas area with rolling hills, expensive homes, and very nice scenery. The base ride is in the 30 mile range but there are several options that will shorten or length the distance. Hope to see you there.

There will be a car pool group meeting at Java Joe's, Thursday morning (10/2/08). Note the later ride start time is 9:30 am.

Edwin will be at Java Joe's at 7:30 leaving around 7:50.

Ramon will be there around 8:00 leaving 8:15.

I know there are others that can take an extra bike so if you meet at Java Joe's we can work out the details. It is about an hour drive to the ride starting point which is the Chevron Station at the intersection of US Hwy 84 & 285 to Ojo Caliente.

There are two options for the ride; 1 - ride directly to Ojo Caliente and back (33 miles fairly flat highway) or 2 - the El Rito loop (53 miles) with a pretty good climb after El Rito but some nice scenery.

Looking forward to seeing you this Thursday.

    Railyard Trail:

It is now possible to ride from the Downtown Railyard all the way to Lamy via new and exisitng trails.

The newer sections of the trail are not yet sealed, but are fine to ride on a Mountain or Touring bike with off road tires and I believe the DOT is planning on sealing the newer sections shortly. There is a new coffee shop in the Railyard area and the trail passes in back of the Second St. Brewery, so refreshment stops abound.

Next Tuesday, November 11th, we will ride the new trail(s)(not all the way to Lamy) so if you would like to join us, bring your Mountain or Off Road bike to Java Joes at 10AM.
There will still be the regular road bike ride for those who so choose.

Minutes from SOBs ride planning Meeting:

The SOBs cycling season started off with a ride planning meeting at the REI Community Room on Feb. 5th. Twenty members showed up and made several decision that are now in effect. The treasurer's report was given, dues this year are $10, the League of American Bicyclists membership and insurance policy were discussed and the ride schedule was finalized.

The Board Members for 2009 are:

    Edwin Crosswhite, President
    Judy Costlow, Ride Director,
    Steve Gitomer, Treasurer
    Bill Pollock, Media Co-ordinator
    Ian Norrish, Web Master
    Steven Hazen, Special Events Overseer
    Devon Dalzell, Social Director
    Dave Simonson, member-at-large

The 2009 ride schedule was decided and is posted on the web at www.santafesobs.com. There will be two groups for each ride this year. An A group will ride longer distances (40 - 60 miles) at a faster pace with a 5 minute regroup time. The B group will ride a shorter distance (20 - 40 miles) at a slower pace with up to 20 minutes for regrouping. Other new things this year are; a ride to Taos, a new Santa Fe loop, and a couple of special events are being planned. Our first ride meets at the Museum Hill Complex, April 9th at 10:00 am.

Judy's position has been changed to Ride Director which means she will be asking some of you to lead rides this year. Ride Leader classes are going to be taught by a Certified Effective Cycling Instructor for riders who assume the ride leaders responsibility.

Edwin presented each member of last years board with a 60 page color photo history of the 2008 cycling season. There is a $30 charge for anyone interested in purchasing a copy.

The Santa Fe Seniors On Bikes (SO affiliated with the League of American Bicyclists (LA January 2009. An advantage of LAB membership is the general club liability insurance coverage for club rides and special events. American Specialty Insurance & Risk Services, Inc. is the underwriter. If you want additional information check their website at www.amerspec.com/lab.

The $10 dues should be paid by the end of April. If you want to pay by mail, make checks payable to the SOBs and mailed to 1428 Miracerros Loop S, Santa Fe, NM 87505 or paid in person to Steve Gitomer at one of the April rides.

We have a really good group on the board this year and I am looking forward to another great cycling season with you SOBs.

There is a lot of interest in training for the century so here is the Tuesday training schedule. Remember the Thursday rides are also a good training opportunity. If you follow the Tuesday schedule you will ride a large part of the century course. You will notice the mileage increases each week with the exception of climbing heartbreak hill.

Date Time Start and Route Mileage
April 14, 2009 9:00 am Eldorado, NM out 17.5 miles and back 35 miles
April 21 9:00 am Eldorado, NM past Galisteo and back 50 miles
April 28 9:00 am Eldorado, NM to Madrid and back 68 miles
May 5 9:00 am Eldorado, NM to Stanley and back 70 miles
May 12 9:00 am Madrid, NM climb Heartbreak Hill 50 miles
May 17 7:00 am Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center Santa Fe Century 100 miles

Here is some wise advise from Herb Schron, "Training for the Century can include small group rides with the group being close to the same level. But most quality training is an individual thing with an emphasis on work ethics and discipline... not socialization. You've got to have the mind take charge and push without external influences."
