Unscheduled Rides

New Roads

1. Railyard Trail:

It is now possible to ride from the Downtown Railyard all  the way to Lamy via new and exisitng trails, or ride to the Spur Trail and exit at the SFCC on Richards Ave.

The newer sections of the trail are  now sealed. There is a new coffee shop in the Railyard area and the trail passes in back of the Second St. Brewery, so refreshment stops abound.

2. Rabbit road extension:

Good for riding now and I ride this regularly (very low traffic)

Dinosaur Road is now paved all the way through from Rancho Viejo Blvd
(at Cerrillos Road) to Richards. Also, there is a new road, an extension of Rabbit Road, that
goes from Oshara Village (which is a new sub division on Richards just
norht of the Community College) and connects to Old Agua Fria Road -
which leads to St. Francis and then up to Old Pecos Trail via the old Rabbit
Road.

The good thing about the two of these new roads is that you can
essentially go from 14 to Old Pecos Trail by staying on the south side
of I25 and avoiding the heavier traffic on Rodeo, Zia, etc.

This new road is now officially open to traffic

Although November 1 is our final listed ride for the 2007 season there will be many good weather days before the 2008 calendar is posted. Rides on Thursdays as well as other days will be posted throughout the winter with hopes that riding is not based on the calendar. Keep your eyes open for lots of rides between now and April.

Hi Everyone, I think tomorrow, Sat. the 17th is supposed to be a good day, so I am proposing a make-up ride to Rio En Medio (Chupadero). Meet at the Murales Parking lot at 8:30 am and we will head out from there. If you want some extra climbing you can park at my house on Gonzales Rd at 8:00 and we will ride down to Murales and then, on the way back we will return by Sierra del Norte for that extra kick. The ride is about 30 miles and a fair bit of climbing. My number is 820-1036 for questions. Thanks. Judy

    Thursday May 29th

The SOB ride this Thursday will have an alternate route for anyone that does not have the time to drive to Las Vegas.

Ride 1 is the scheduled ride to Mora. The plan is to meet at the Agora in Eldorado at 7:45 am. From there we will car pool to Las Vegas for the Mora Loop. Actual starting point is Sapello on NM 518 about 10 miles north of Las Vegas, estimated regrouping time is 9:15 am.

Ride 2 will start at Fort Marcy (Murales parking lot) at 8:00 for a ride with Judy. Details from Judy follow: I will lead a ride from the Murales parking lot (1 block north of Fort Marcy behind the tennis courts) on Thursday starting at 8 am. I am going up Old Taos Highway, out Tano Road and over to Las Campanas and the circle over there. We will come back through Los Suenos and Aldea, up Buckman Road, out 599 to Ridgetop and back to the parking lot. I can add in some extra hills for anyone who wants more climbing. It is about 32 miles.

    Cheap shorts and jersey offer:
Thus far we have received orders for three jerseys and two pairs of shorts. Our minimum is 15 each. Our cutoff date for orders is June 17. As opposed to last year's constant reminders, this will be the last notice regarding the above. So, if all of the SOB's who were begging for stuff get on the ball and place an order, maybe we'll get enough to call Voler. Otherwise, checks in hand will be returned.

    View of the Caldera
It was simply wonderful cycling weather, cool at the start with 75 degrees at the end. Clear skies with a very light breeze. There was plenty of climbing (3,000 feet) the highest point was 9,044 feet. The long riders probably did a total of 5,000 feet of climbing and both groups met at the Jemez Mountain Country Store for a break before heading back to their cars

The winter SOB cycling schedule is:

On Tuesdays meet at Java Joes's (DeVargus Mall) by 10:00.
On Thursday meet at Java Joe's by 10:00.

There are at least five different routes from this starting location that includes: climbing (Hyde Park and Poaque), rolling hills (Las Campanas and Santa Fe Trail), and flat (Old Las Vegas Hwy and El Dorado area). The riders present will decide the route based on weather conditions, time constraints, and personal needs. The length can be varied to make the rides meet cycling needs.

This is your chance to keep fit through the winter months. Hope to see you!
